The
existing townhouse kitchen was approximately 18 years old
with cabinets constructed with a melamine finish. Almond was
the primary color throughout the kitchen. Since the kitchen
was only 10' by 10', a cabinet choice was made that would
make the kitchen appear larger and brighter. White thermo-foil
cabinets were chosen for this remodel. The pinkish ceramic
tile floor was the first thing to be removed. Because the
the proximity of appliances to the sink, the existing layout
was duplicated in the new installation. With cost being a
consideration, the existing countertop Formica was stripped
and the countertop was resurfaced. Only the backsplash was
rebuilt on the countertop.
Due
to the size of the kitchen and cabinet space available, it
was imperative that additional cabinets were added. The decision
to knock out the partition wall between the kitchen and the
front room was made. This allowed an open feeling and made
the kitchen appear larger. It also allowed for a peninsula
countertop to be installed with additional cabinets below.
A corner cabinet with frosted glass was added above. In order
to not close in the kitchen, the cabinets were reduced in
depth. This helped to maintain a good amount of floor space
in the kitchen and allow for two people to work at once.
The
appearance of the kitchen was greatly enhanced with the new
cabinets, but the tumbled marble backsplash added a touch
of class that dramatically finished off the kitchen area.
An accent pattern was added to the backsplash. Halogen under-the-counter
lighting provides great lighting for the workspace and brings
attention to the beautiful tile and countertop. A deeper sink
with a rear corner drain was chosen and allowed for pitchers
to easily be filled. A water filtration system was installed
under the sink and an under the counter garbage disposal was
also incorporated into the design.
